Social networking sites have been used as part of a marketing strategy for a while but it is usually the end location between marketing mediums. Marketing thus far has been relegated to purchasing ads to be shown on these sites and hoping for the best. Now Twitter is showing the world that using cross media marketing in a social networking site is a smart move.
Recently Twitter announced changes in how the site looks and performs. The most important one for marketers is inline pictures and video. Joining Twitter in this venture is DailyBooth, Deviant ART, Etsy, Flickr, Justin TV, Kickstarter, Kiva, Photozou, Plixi, Twitgoo, TwitPic, TwitVid, USTREAM, Vimeo, yfrog and YouTube.
While not available for the general public yet, it will be shortly. Take a minute and watch this video to see how it will look and work.
As a marketing agency we are excited to see this type of cross media venture. Businesses that want to spread a marketing message within 140 characters or less have been relegated thus far to linking a video or photograph with a tiny URL taking the reader to another site. Many times the viewer will say forget it and ignore the link unless the wording in the tweet makes one sit up and take notice. Allowing the reader to stay on site and still view the message will give businesses a greater opportunity to get their message seen and heard.
A good marketing strategy should always include strong content. Using this type of multi-media Twitter is making sure marketers become content creators and not simply content regurgitaters.
A smart marketing strategy will always employ cross media marketing in some manner whether it be conventional media, direct mail, print or the Web. Twitter's idea has just made the world of of marketing strategy a bit more interesting.
