Conspiracy Theories and Falling Down The Rabbit Hole

Any time you get so interested in something you cannot stop, that is falling down the rabbit hole. It happens to all of us now and then. This is my story of falling down the rabbit hole and my quest to get back out.

Not long ago I was happily tripping down the road of life, unaware of a growing group of believers. One day as I sat bemoaning my fate and that of the world an otherwise intelligent, bright and conservative friend of mine suggested I watch a video. I was to bring an open mind and something to wet my whistle as it ran 2 hours. Curious, I queried about the subject matter since an open mind was a prerequisite. The answer was "trust me". The last time I heard that I had my car in for a tune up and left behind $1,400 in repairs I had no idea I needed. To say I was now skeptical about this video would be an understatement.

I turned on my trusty computer, got comfortable and grabbed my cup of tea. Two hours and 2 minutes later the tea was sitting untouched and my mind was still trying to assimilate the information I had just seen and heard. Could it be true? Even if only one statement in the whole movie was accurate, I wanted to know. I set out to dispute the supposed gobbledygook that was thrown at me. I had a mission.

Two days later not only had I NOT disputed what I had seen, but I had more questions.

What it is that caused me to fall down the rabbit hole? Dear reader, take a deep breath. What I am about to say may shock, appall or otherwise suspend your belief in this author.

I had become one of those rampant, fanatical, crazed, idiotic people known as a conspiracy theorist. Shocking I know. I couldn't believe it myself. Actually, there isn't a thing about me that is rampant, I only get fanatical about watching a certain television program, I get crazed when cut off in traffic and most of my family and friends do not think I am an idiot.

The media has painted conspiracy theorists as a group of slovenly radical lunatics with nothing better to do in life than attempt to prove there are governmental, religious and personal plots against the uninformed majority. I felt the same way. Now, well now let us just say I have a suspension of belief. Like all things in life, I take the information I receive with a grain of salt, pick and choose what I can accept and ignore the stuff I cannot fathom. The problem is I am not sure any more. Everything I grew up with, all the teachings of my elders had been sent into a tail spin and I did not know how to react.

One World Order, Builderbergers, Zeitgeist, Loose Change, Endgame, Esoteric Agenda, 2012: the list goes on and on. There are so many questions. In my quest for refutation I only found more to query. It was never ending. I had to stop lest I remain in that rabbit hole forever. Once I had crawled back out I looked at the world in a whole new light. My life was forever changed when a week later the first shots in the economic disaster we now face came to light with the imminent collapse of major banking and mortgage companies. Another prophesy fulfilled.

Because of my searching I now look at things in a more skeptical vein. I want to go back and be an innocent again. Yes I still talk to that friend. Now however whenever I hear the words "You won't believe what I found..." I go running away with my fingers in my ears yelling "LA LA LA LA LA, I can't HEAR you!" It may be childish but it works. Although, I did happen to catch him say something about Michael Jackson really being an alien. Hmm maybe just a quick search into that one.

See you on the other side!

Conspiracy theories are verrrry seductive. I love them, it's like reading a good murder mystery! Now I know you don't believe in them any more, but have you the heard the one about the Catholic Church and the Mafia getting rid of the pope who wanted to get rid of corruption in the church?....

I never compared them to a good murder mystery but you're right, it is a lot like that. No, I haven't heard about the Church and the Mafia. Oooo something new to look for... hehe

At first I thought you were seriously behind conspiracy theories and this would be another 2012 post. Glad to see you came to your senses at the end. Send me a message if you find the information on Michael Jackson though.
