Slavery in 2010

With all the talk of Martin Luther King going on this week concerning the Glenn Beck and Al Sharpton rallies, I could not help but think back on all the troubles this country has experienced with slavery in its history. While we as a nation have made strides in giving equality to all, there is still a problem going on that few of us are aware of.
27,000,000 people in this world have their lives and livelihoods held under the thumbs of others. We can call them indentured workers or domestic servants, but they are held in bondage to another. That is slavery in 2010.
According to Free The Slaves organization, every country around the world has made it illegal to own' another person, yet it continues to happen. On each continent and in almost every country there are documented cases of human trafficking, yet it does not stop. Parents sell children in hopes for a better life when they can no longer provide for their offspring themselves. The lives they lead are full of abuse and degradation, working 20 hours a day for no pay and little food in conditions most of us would not allow a pet to endure. They are beaten, berated and raped and made to debase themselves in any number of ways.
If you think that you live in a place where that does not happen, you may be surprised.
"there may be people held in slavery in your community. Slavery happens in nearly every country in the world, and the US and Europe are not immune. Research that Free the Slaves conducted with the University of California, Berkeley found documented cases of slavery and human trafficking in more than 90 cities across the United States."
They are brought in as family' members to help raise the children of the power couple you so admire. They work the textile factories that make the clothes we put on our backs. They work the fields picking the produce we import into our grocery stores. And we don't even know it.
While abuse runs rampant in homes across America against our children and our friends, we can add into that those souls who through no choice of their own, are held against their will.
How does slavery continue in this day and age? Simple; just like abuse, whether physical, mental or sexual, as long as people turn a blind eye to what happens under their own noses and those that are put into these situations have no place to turn, it will never end. Educating yourself is the first step. Volunteer at shelters and within organizations that help the downtrodden. If you or someone you know is being abused in ANY way find someone you can talk to and get help from.
There is no shame in needing help. No one should ever have to live under the thumb of another nor should they have to remain due to fear. We cannot help every person in the world, but if during our lifetime, we can help just one, imagine what an impact that could make.

Top-level comments on this article: (4 total)Grace, this is a very thoughtful take on a difficult issue-one that few wish to tread beyond the established topics. It strikes me that if folks wish to change such evil, it should begin w/ an open discussion. I would like someone knowlegable to comment on 'Institutional Slavery'.I would like that too Bing. Finding that site was an eye opener. Now to find someone knowledgable!
Hi, I have written two books on slavery in the modern world.I wrote the books from first hand knowledge of the activities and of course I changed the name of the people but the stories are accurate. Being able to buy 3 people for my own fun and entertainment and then sell them later is common in the world today. My first book is The Adventures of David and Rachel - OrlandoMy second book is St. Augustine - The Adventures of David and Rachel. It is not going to be stamped out because the "free" world is up to its waistline in being users of this type of slave. The USSR's financial backbone is porno. They sell women and children, boys and girls to the highest bidder. The Rag head countries by eastern european women for their own fun and entertainment all the time. When they tire of them they are sold on the open market to lower forms of life that work them till they have to kill them off and get more.If you are really interested in getting major depressed and bummed out beyond your worst imagination then you have to go to the asian countries. Of course the English, French, German, and Americans are the largest "users" of such slaves. One of the largest black ops contractors of the American government is a well known buyer of sex slaves for personal use. I am not talking about buying theier time I am talking about buying their person and then when they tire of them they swap them around the compounds.Depressed yet?Until there is someone with authority that wants to eliminate this problem it will continue. Period. In Orlando Florida I posed as a buyer of Eastern European women between the ages of 18-25 and in less that two wekks I was offerd 2 19 year olds and a 20 year old from one of the russian countries that ends in STAN. By the time I had set up the bust they got away. I failed on that one and since I am too well known around Orlando I am no longer a player. Too bad. I should have just pulled out my gun and shot the dude that was selling them, but then I am not that level of person. What did you plan on doing about it once you found out how to get involved?Be Blessed;Harm.................:)P.S. Send a Hi to Coquina Paul!!!!BB;H.......:)
