The Power of Marketing is the Power of Positive Thinking

In marketing circles the idea is to present a message in the best possible manner in order for the populace to take notice. Once noticed the company or person then desires a call to action whether it is a comment on a blog, making a purchase or requesting more information.

In politics the elected official or "party" parlay a message to the public showing their position on an idea, subject or person. Once noticed the politicians then desires the public to stand behind that message through giving support either financially or with votes.

What happens though when there are those who do not like the message being conveyed?

In politics debates ensue, accusations are flung, apologies are forthcoming and the world continues to spin. Everyone involved from the politician to the journalists, pundits and bloggers all gain the notorious fifteen minutes of fame hopefully catapulting them into the sphere of infamy. Having negative publicity in this case can have positive results in the long run.

In business and personal marketing if the wrong message is being sent there is no savior for negative publicity. Testing a marketing campaign before mass launch is not only smart it is imperative. Small and mid-sized companies do not have the financial and brand recognition backing that major corporations have. If smaller companies make marketing mistakes it could cost them more than a tax write off: it could cost them their business reputation.

A business should never market in a negative vein. Using phrases such as "We are better than so-and-so" or "Why our products are better than theirs" are best left at high school sporting events. Instead use phrases that include "We are number one because" or "See why more people come to us" instead.

In a world of instantaneous viral networking thanks to tweets, texting and blogs if a marketing message is found lacking the world is certain to hear about it. Done properly, testing to small groups beforehand can save any company from a massive dose of negativity or even worse, being overlooked altogether.

The power of marketing is the power of positive thinking.

Very well put. In California, the two candidates for governor are: rich white female former CEO republican and old white guy democrat who has been in politics for decades. The rich white female has spent like 100 million of her own money on ads, mostly being attack commercials on TV. The other old white guy hasn't put out any commercials... its just been up to unions or other organizations to promote him. People don't want the female to "buy the election" but that is what might actually happen. Pretty annoying, huh? It is too bad that negative marketing apparently works very well in politics. It does, no matter how many times I see these ads, seem so wrong.

Thanks for the article Grace!

I agree with you 100%. Negativity in politics seems to get more attention. We as a society enjoy seeing others in a negative light. Pathetic when you think about it. All the money spent on elections makes me ill. And that will be tomorrow's post ;)

Nice seeing you as always.

Unfortunately that's very true David. Honor goes out the door when money walks in.
